Environmental Math: The Value of a Tree
Math can be found in everything, including nature. Students see the trees through the eyes of a forester by using basic mathematical formulas and the growth rate of tree species to determine the age of various trees in our woods. Then we head to the ponds to catch and release macroinvertebrates, participating in our citizen science project. We discover how scientists use the creatures and data they collect to determine the health of a wetland. Students will get a chance to calculate the water quality of the pond they explored and contribute their findings to the Center.
