Winter Tree ID
Saturday, February 8, 2025 | 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
$50.00 – $66.00Saturdays, February 8 & 15
Tree identification is an important tool to help someone identify the health of a forest. In this two-part workshop, you’ll learn what helps identify a tree, some strategies that help ID, and which kinds of trees we find living around us. The ecology around trees is an important aid in ID, so we will discuss how trees interact with wildlife and each other. We will discover which species provide the most for the habitat around them. You will learn to identify ashes, oaks, birches, pines and more, as we walk around the trails of Schlitz Audubon. You’ll receive custom materials to help ID and to continue your skills at home. We will continue the class on the trails regardless of weather conditions.
This two-part workshop will be led by Naturalist Jim Thielke and Horticulturist and Master Gardener, Sandy Manning. Jim’s expertise with trees, combined with his bachelor’s degree in plant and fungal biology, allows him to provide a unique perspective on tree ID strategies. Sandy is a master of all things related to plants; she offers a horticulturists’ take on which trees are considered a special concern and which trees to avoid planting.
