Phenology Hike: Spring in the Air
Friday, April 18, 2025 | 9:00 am - 10:30 am
$17.00 – $23.00Phenology is the study of the timing and occurrence of cyclical patterns and events in nature. When do birds migrate and nest? When do flowers bloom and leaves drop? Nearly all plants and animals follow the meteorological cues of daylight, temperature and rainfall for their survival. During the glorious spring migration season, bird activity abounds, and spring ephemerals should be in bloom.
Phenology enables the study of small-scale and large-scale biomonitoring. This is a critical field of research which allows us to study how living organisms respond to environmental changes. Growing awareness of climate change and strong seasonal variations are keys to our understanding about how – or whether – nature can adapt. During our hike, we will visit the Central Wetlands loop and forested areas of the property to investigate and discuss recent patterns. Your guides for the morning will be Director of Education Tom Finley and Staff Horticulturist Sandy Manning, who have both been investigating the flora and fauna of Schlitz Audubon for over twenty years.
This program will take place entirely outdoors.
